General:

Basil is a low growing herb, with large leaves that is grown as a perennial in warm, tropical climates. Basil originated from to Asia, and is now used heavily world over. There are over 12 varieties of Basil, Sweet Basil being the most popular.  

Basil can be grown from organic herb seeds. The seeds should be sown and kept indoors until the plant reaches the 4 leaf stage, the seedlings can easily be transplanted to an outdoor garden in early summer. This remarkable herb is widely found in organic vegetable gardens.

The Basil herb enjoys a rich history in folklore. In many cultures basil is known as a symbol for love, holiness and purity. In the Hindi religion, the "Holy Basil" variety is particularly significant and has a long and involved role in Hindi tradition.


Description:
 
Sweet Basil is a hairy, labiate plant.  It grows to between 30–130 cm tall, with smooth, light green leaves 3–11 cm long and 1–6 cm broad. Its flowers are white and grow in the axils of the leaves.

The various Basil varieties differ in size, shape, odor and color of the leaves.  

Harvesting

Cut or pick leaves as required, always from the top. When flowers are produced pick as soon as possible to encourage a more leafy growth.

Uses:

Organic Basil seeds can be grown and used easily in your home.  Basil is a source of essential oil for use in foods, flavors, and fragrances. The green aromatic leaves are used in salads and can be used fresh or dried to add flavor to all sorts of dishes.
